In the 1970's they published a softcover art book about Richard Dadd. I think he was of French decent I haven't read the book in 9 years, so I don't remember if he was French living in a british mental hospital or the other way around. I do know that he came from a wealthy important family. He did kill his father by stabbing him. Was mentally sick and had paranoid skisophrenia.
He was able to attend the french academy and draw orientalism while he sketched and lived in Morroco, Algeria or Egypt for a while as he was falling apart, but before he flew way off the handle and lost control of himself. He is in the the 1960's time life book 'the Mind' If you like fairy art work you'll love his art. It's like Van Gogh's mental angst with academic classical realism history painting illustration. If you like mythology artwork you might also like Herni Fuselli a Swiss artist of the 1700's and Arnold Broklin a german mythology painter of the late 1700-to-1800's. All of Dadd's people and fairy tale characters look tortured and mentally disturbed! I draw monsters or people that look very intense and anxious in their eyes. I am not oblivious of artists like Richard Dadd being an influence to my imagination and artistic voice. I feel bad for Richard Dadd, he had such unique talent, but was to mentally ill to function in society and have freedom outside a mental hospital after he finished his studies at the academy.
