There actually is a pretty good film about the Bollywood film industry made in the late 1960's early 1970's called 'BOMBAY TALKIE' I recommend it, it is a good story and has interesting characters. I was one of the few white awkward teens in the 1990's from the San Diego suburbs who had a thing for bollywood songs like the multi octave singing! and the bollywood movie musical numbers! I don't understand how to speak Hindi but I know what is being said by the way the singers are singing and by the beat and instruments of the music that help carry the tune! Bollywood especially old bollywood of the 1960's to the 1990's was a good fit for me! I saw Ashe Boshe sing live at UCLA in 2005! Most bollywood singers have a face for radio. That all adds to the magic of the fantasy of the love story where the actors are lip singing and making a new layer or level to the narrative music video in the movie! To get back to being an eccentric teen in San Diego I loved sythensizer music by Wendy Carlos, Isao Tomita, Jean Michel Jarre, popul vul, and Tangerine Dream, and Jean Jacques Perry and Gershon Kingsley. I loved the bagpipes and was in love with the songs and sounds the bagpipes made, it wasn't because of movies like Rob Roy or Braveheart that I liked bagpipes music, though I did really like both those films as a teenager! When I hear the bagpipes I feel calm inside and normal, it's like a medication that works really well for me. I don't have access to bagpipe players at my whim and hearing them played on a cd or online is not the same thing as the instrument right next to you! I was also in supermarination 1960's puppet TV show like Supercar and the Thunderbirds when I was a teenager in high school!
If you like and identify with the romantic love stories of old classic Disney cartoons like Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty you might very well fall in love with the musical numbers in a bollywood film from 1960 to 2001. Around the early 2000's and late 1990's bollywood numbers starting adding techno or white western dancers and performers, that was awrong thing to do and a total buzz kill! I'm looking for the romance and escapism of the true love story of the male and female character. I'm not interested in bollywood guys acting like douchebags full of themselves like macho pigs staring at white women idiot strippers in a bollywood music number! No one can fall in love with the characters or daydream into a short little fantasy vacation when the dream like video has people you would not enjoy the company of and have no enduring heartfelt value to an audience! Trying to be modern, urban, trendy, fashionable, and superficial is a major mistake that the bollywood film industry has made in the last 10 years! If I want to see some self absorbed white person I can find that anywhere I look in America it's all around me and it doesn't please me! Bollywood is supposed to be sweet and romantic and heartfelt with the love musical numbers, even the numbers about crime or criminal gangs in the 1990's still had a Bugsy Berkeley sweetness and pleasantness to them! I used to go to the Indian music shops in Berkeley and buy video and DVD compilations of bollywood movie music numbers or the music singing soundtrack CD's. I started buying bollywood movie music singing CD's in the mid 1990's while still in high school! My dad thought it was strange I liked it so much, but in reality the temperment of bollywood music and dancing numbers is again like a classic Disney love story cartoon film!
