He is not my all time favorite artist but he is amazing at painting and sculpture. He makes fantastic narrative story instilations. His work is similar to Alice Neel the famous funky old lady painter of eccentric and whimsical subjects and brush work. I have a few books by him already, but in July I picked up another of his books a wonderful oversize anthology from 2003!
He is kind of a mix of George Segul the artist who made instilations with plaster human statues in environments and Thomas Hart Benton for his animorphic bendable perspective and composition choices. I would love to be as talented at sculpture and painting as Red Grooms. I think this year he will be an influence on me taking a new direction trying out to put my monsters and creatures in a world, setting, or environment. Red Grooms people all have a character and all show an emotion and yet when they are in a world or environment instilation space they "fit in". I guess that is what my ceramics teachers wanted me to do with my monsters by having them photo documented in a real environment humans use, is to give them some place to be and exist and have a purpose or give their personality and emotions a place and setting that they are responding to and not just put them in a dry gallery white walls environment.
I think Red Grooms best work so far is his "NEW YORK" instillation and character sculptures! They were made by him in the late 1970's and early 1980's!
